Our new album - Step Off And Fly

Our new album has been released and is available on Amazon Music, Spotify, iTunes and other established distribution outlets. It is of course available here on the Music page.

Hilary writes vocal-led story-songs sung by Lucy Pickering as well as exciting jazz-influenced instrumentals. She explores themes of new beginnings, mindfulness, change, celebration and loss. Her music has one foot in the late 60s-early 70s and one foot firmly in the present day.

Songs on the album range from the funky, upbeat Mojo, to the re-imagined and jazz reharmonised Eleanor Rigby and Big Yellow Taxi; from the soulful anthem on mindfulness, Just Breathe, to the Celtic sound of Grass Is Always Greener; Ingrid's Song is wonderfully lyrical and gentle while the dynamic instrumentals Sarah's Hour and Together burst through like sparkling spritzers on a hot summer's day. Lots of variety but all containing Hilary Burt's hallmark sound.

About Hilary Burt's Blue Calluna

Hilary first started approaching the Blue Calluna musicians in the autumn of 2017. She had an idea for a new band and was starting to write music with a smaller group in mind (after spending two years involved with Terry Pack's large ensemble Trees and writing for up to 40 players).

She sketched out a possible 12 or 13 tunes for a future gig and possible album, and started focussing on one song at a time. Being someone who gets easily overwhelmed, she decided to do the rehearsing and recording in two batches with a couple of months between each batch. This gave her time to completely focus on finishing the first group of  tunes before moving onto the next group.  Breaking down the process in that way made the whole project more manageable.

Hilary plays alto sax and flute, alongside Lucy Pickering (vocals, flute); Kate Hogg (alto sax, flute, bansuri flute); Beccy Rork (tenor, soprano sax, flute); Steve Morgan (keyboards); Dave Barnard (bass guitar); Alex Eberhard (drums, guitar); Chris Stockel (percussion, drums).
